Yuki-onna – Japan

Nearest city: Snowbound regions of northern & central Japan

The Yuki-onna (“Snow Woman”) is one of Japan’s most enduring yokai—an ethereal, pale woman who appears during blizzards, gliding soundlessly across snowdrifts without leaving footprints. Described with white skin, long black hair, and ice-cold breath, she is said to lure stranded travellers with a serene, ghost-like beauty before draining their life with a single icy exhalation. In some regional tales, she appears at the doors of mountain homes begging for warmth, while in others she spares victims who show kindness or humility. Sightings continue in Japan’s snowbound regions, where sudden cold drafts and glimpses of a tall, white figure in storms keep the legend alive.
