The Yule Cat, or Jólakötturinn, is a colossal black feline from Icelandic winter folklore said to prowl the snowy countryside on Christmas Eve, devouring anyone who failed to receive new clothing before the holiday. Described as having glowing yellow eyes and fur that bristles like needles, the creature is tied to the old Icelandic wool-production tradition—symbolising industry, generosity, and social pressure during the harsh winter months. Some tales link the cat to the fearsome troll-mother Grýla and her sons, the Yule Lads, forming a family of winter monsters that stalk the dark season. Sightings of a massive black silhouette crossing remote roads still circulate today, keeping the legend alive.
