Yūbetsu Coal Mine

Once a bustling mining town in eastern Hokkaido, the Yūbetsu Coal Mine was abandoned in the mid-20th century after demand collapsed, leaving behind rusting machinery and rows of empty worker housing. Locals claim the mine is now haunted by the spirits of miners who died in accidents underground. Urban explorers report shadowy figures in the tunnels, the sound of pickaxes striking stone, and disembodied voices echoing through the ruined shafts. The site’s isolation and bleak decay have made it one of Hokkaido’s most notorious ghost towns.
