Stull Cemetery, a small rural graveyard outside Lawrence, has earned an international reputation as the “Gateway to Hell.” According to legend, a stone church once stood here where satanic rituals were performed, and where the Devil himself is said to appear twice a year — on the spring equinox and Halloween. The church was torn down in the 1990s, but visitors still report eerie silences, sudden gusts of wind, and shadowy figures moving among the graves. Myths also tell of an old tree once used for hangings and of strange lights flickering in the distance.
