The Yacumama, meaning “Mother of the Water” in Quechua, is a legendary giant serpent said to inhabit the rivers and lagoons of the Peruvian Amazon. Described as reaching 30–60 meters long, it is feared for its ability to capsize boats by spouting powerful jets of water. Locals of Yurimaguas and surrounding Amazonian villages leave offerings at riverbanks to appease the creature, believing it to be a guardian spirit of the waterways. In the 20th century, explorers and missionaries reported hearing roaring sounds and massive disturbances in the water, with some accounts claiming to have seen the serpent’s head rising above the river.
