The Headless Nun – Canada
Nearest city: Miramichi, New Brunswick
Legend holds that Sister Marie Inconnue (‘Unknown’), a French nun who came to serve Acadian settlers in the Miramichi area, was murdered during the mid-1700s struggle between Acadians and British forces. The versions differ: one says she was asked for the location of buried community funds and refused, prompting her attackers to behead her; another says sailors demanded treasure; others say a lone madman. Her body was allegedly returned to France, but her head was never found. Legend says her spirit still walks frequently along the paths of French Fort Cove, sometimes seen carrying something and asking visitors to help locate her head. Since the early 2000s, “Dare the Dark: The Headless Nun Experience” tour has drawn visitors at night along wooded trails at Fort Cove.
