Richat Structure – Mauritania
Nearest city: Ouadane, Sahara Desert
Visible from space as a vast spiral 40 kilometers wide, the Richat Structure (nicknamed The Eye of the Sahara) is one of the planet’s most enigmatic landforms. Originally thought to be an impact crater, it’s now identified as a deeply eroded geological dome, yet its perfect concentric rings and isolation in the desert have inspired centuries of speculation. Some believe it marks the site of Atlantis, noting its resemblance to Plato’s description of a ringed island city, while nomadic Berber legends speak of a “giant’s eye” burned into the sand by gods. Astronauts aboard Gemini 4 first photographed it in 1965, calling it a navigation beacon for the Sahara. Modern explorers, YouTubers, and fringe researchers continue to document magnetic anomalies, unusual lightning activity, and unexplained drone malfunctions near the inner rings.
