Ondofa – Zimbabwe
Nearest city: Bulilima, Matabeleland South

In Zimbabwean folklore, “goblins” (often termed zvikwambo or tokoloshe) are not whimsical sprites but malevolent familiars bound to witchcraft, greed, or inherited family transgressions. These entities are feared as persistent intruders that infiltrate domestic spaces to cause sickness, financial ruin, and nocturnal physical attacks. Unlike localized spirits, the Ondofa is a mobile predator that attaches itself to households and institutions where social or spiritual discord is already brewing. A significant modern flashpoint occurred at Minda High School in Maphisa, where repeated reports of invisible night attacks and poltergeist activity—such as self-opening doors and rhythmic window knocking—led to widespread panic among staff and students. Further south in Bulilima, the legend gained contemporary weight when a police base was reportedly abandoned by officers who claimed nightly harassment by female-identifying goblins. These accounts are frequently documented by local news outlets and shared via regional social media, illustrating a belief system that remains a potent, lived reality in Matabeleland.
