Kaaiman Mermaid – South Africa
Nearest city: Kaaimans River, Western Cape

The Kaaiman belongs to the dark water of the Kaaimans River west of Wilderness, where older stories place a mermaid-like being in the deep pools below the pass and near the river mouth. It is usually described as female, with long black hair, pale skin, glowing or red eyes, and a cry that carries over the water after dark. Unlike the softer European mermaid, this one is dangerous: local tradition treats it as a drowning spirit, blamed for luring people too close to the river before pulling them under. The setting fits the legend perfectly — steep gorge walls, black water, sudden depth, and a stretch of river that already carried a reputation for danger long before it became a scenic stop on the Garden Route. The most recent verified sighting came on 5 January 2008 at Suurbraak, where Daniel Cupido and friends said they saw a pale, long-haired figure in the river and heard a sound like a woman crying; South African coverage openly linked the encounter back to the older Kaaiman tradition. The legend has not gone quiet since then: heritage coverage on the Kaaimans River was still repeating the warning in 2022, describing the Kaaiman as a malevolent mermaid-like creature said to drown victims, especially children.
