Nam Koo Terrace – China
Nearest city: Wan Chai, Hong Kong

Built in 1918 by a wealthy Shanghai merchant family, Nam Koo Terrace is a preserved colonial mansion in Wan Chai that earned the moniker “The Haunted House of Wan Chai” following the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong. During World War II, the red-brick villa was allegedly seized by the Imperial Japanese Army and used as a “comfort house” (military brothel), where local women were subjected to horrific atrocities and executions. Neighbors and passersby frequently report hearing disembodied screams and seeing eerie green lights emanating from the windows, while some claim to have seen the apparitions of headless spirits wandering the balconies at night. The mansion’s reputation is so intense that in 2003, a group of teenagers reportedly had to be hospitalized for psychiatric shock after a “possession” incident while attempting to explore the grounds, leading the site to be heavily fenced and monitored.
