While celebrated for its architecture, the mission is a monument to a “dark conversion” period where indigenous populations, devastated by European diseases like smallpox and measles, sought refuge within the walls only to be subjected to a rigid, monastic existence that many never survived. The atmosphere in the nave is notoriously heavy, with visitors reporting a “weight on the chest” and an unnatural chill that clings to the original 18th-century frescoes. The most documented entity is the “Brown Friar,” a hooded figure seen drifting through the arched cloisters; he is preceded by the distinct, rhythmic clacking of wooden prayer beads against stone—a sound that has been captured on audio by investigators when the mission is closed to the public.

The haunting extends to the surrounding grounds, where the 1835 clash between Mexican forces and Texian insurgents (led by James Bowie and James Fannin) left dozens of soldiers dead in the brush.
