Sightings surged in the 1980s, with dozens of fishermen and boaters reporting encounters, and local newspapers regularly covered the phenomenon. While skeptics suggest sturgeon or logs, Memphré remains a beloved regional legend and a fixture of Canadian cryptid lore.
