The Leprechaun is Ireland’s most iconic folkloric being, traditionally depicted as a small, bearded man dressed in green, known for mischief, shoemaking, and guarding hidden pots of gold. Rooted in Celtic mythology, leprechauns were once considered part of the wider Aos Sí (fairy folk). In 1989 a local in Carlingford, County Louth claimed to have found tiny clothes and gold coins near a stone known as the “Fairy Hill,” leading to the area being declared a protected leprechaun habitat in 2009. Today, Carlingford even hosts an annual Leprechaun Hunt, blending folklore with tourism, while some locals insist the stories are based on real encounters with Ireland’s elusive fairy folk.
