Fushimi Inari Shrine – Japan

Nearest city: Fushimi Ward, Kyoto

Fushimi Inari Shrine

Founded in 711 CE, Fushimi Inari Shrine is famed for its thousands of vermilion torii gates winding up Mount Inari, dedicated to Inari Ōkami, kami of rice, prosperity, and fox spirits (kitsune). Visitors frequently report shadowy fox-like figures, whispers along the mountain paths at night, and the sensation of being guided or misled between gates. Small sub-shrines deep in the forest are linked to offerings that appear rearranged or disturbed overnight.
