Occidental Hotel

Founded in 1880, this Wild West icon is famously haunted by Emily, the daughter of a resident who allegedly died of cholera in the hotel’s “Bordello” wing during the early 1900s. Emily is described as a thin girl with long, dark hair in a white gown; she is known for mischievous “play” that includes tapping guests on the shoulder or pulling at their clothing. A second, more imposing entity is Margaret, the hotel’s former “lady of the house,” who is seen in Victorian attire patrolling the hallways to ensure order. Modern activity is concentrated in the Prairie Cowboy Suite and the Saloon, where bottles have been documented sliding off shelves and “phantom spurs” are heard clicking on the stairs. Recent 2024 media highlights include documented footage of the door to Room 19 unlatching and opening on its own, a phenomenon local staff attribute to Emily’s restless wandering.
