Wicklow Gaol – Ireland
Nearest city: Wicklow, County Wicklow
Opened in 1702 and grimly nicknamed the “Gates of Hell,” the gaol held United Irishmen after the 1798 Rebellion, famine-era prisoners, and convicts bound for Australia aboard ships like the Hercules. Visitors today report a woman in a long black cloak on the ground floor, men pacing outside cell doors, children’s cries, and an oppressive dread in certain rooms. Featured on Ghost Hunters International, it remains one of Ireland’s best-known haunted sites.
