Utsuro-Bune – Japan
Nearest city: Hitachi, Ibaraki Prefecture

In 1803, fishermen on the eastern coast of Japan reported a mysterious round, hollow vessel—the Utsuro-Bune—drifting ashore, shaped like an iron-bound box with crystal windows. Inside sat a young foreign woman with pale skin and red hair, clutching a sealed container she refused to let anyone touch; she spoke an unknown language and soon vanished back to sea. Edo-period texts such as Hyōryūki-shū and Ume-no-chiri illustrate the craft with remarkable detail, leading some modern researchers to compare it to an early UFO encounter. The legend remains one of Japan’s most enduring maritime mysteries.
