Sink Hole Sam – USA
Nearest city: Inman, Kansas

First surfacing in the summer of 1952, the legend of Sink Hole Sam is tied to the unique geology of McPherson County, specifically a massive, water-filled natural sinkhole known as the Big Basin near Inman. Unlike the standard serpentine “sea serpent” tropes, Sam is described as a prehistoric, segmented entity—resembling an oversized, 15-to-20-foot earthworm or a primitive Basilosaurus. Witnesses, including local residents Albert Neufeld and George Regehr, noted that the creature moved with a distinct vertical undulation, its body appearing as a series of dark, glistening coils breaching the surface of the murky water. The biology reported was so specific that some researchers at the time speculated the creature was a relict species trapped for millennia in the vast Arbuckle Aquifer before the sinkhole collapsed and provided a gateway to the surface.
The “hotspot” for the creature remains the Big Basin, a site characterized by its stagnant, silty water and the sheer limestone walls that drop sharply into the depths. During the peak of the 1952 sightings, the local community took the threat seriously enough that the Inman Chamber of Commerce reportedly considered trying to capture the entity for study. The creature, occasionally nicknamed “Foop” by locals, was said to be highly sensitive to vibrations on the shore; witnesses often reported the water being perfectly still until they approached the edge, at which point a massive, rhythmic wake would suddenly streak toward the center of the basin. While modern sightings are rare, the site remains a focal point for “subterranean relict” theories, with visitors still reporting unexplained surface disturbances and the sound of something heavy “slapping” the water in the dead of night when the wind is completely still.
