Poveglia Island – Italy
Nearest city: Venice
Sitting in the Venetian Lagoon, Poveglia was once a dumping ground for plague victims, where pits of burning corpses scarred the soil. Later, its crumbling asylum became infamous for a doctor who allegedly experimented on patients before falling or being pushed from the bell tower. Locals refuse to set foot on the island, claiming anguished cries and the tolling of a bell long removed can still be heard drifting across the water.
