Ozark Howler – USA

Nearest city: Eureka Springs, Arkansas

A legendary cryptid said to haunt the remote forests and hills of the Ozark Mountains. Described as a large, black, bear-like beast with glowing red eyes, horns, and a chilling, unearthly howl, reports of the creature date back to the early 1800s and persist today. While the majority of encounters come from rural Arkansas and southern Missouri, the Howler’s eerie screams have also been reported in eastern Oklahoma. Although some early 2000s reports were traced to hoaxes, credible sightings—often accompanied by unexplained animal noises—still surface periodically in local news, cryptid forums, and social media. Many locals treat the Howler as a campfire story, but recent posts on r/cryptids and local Facebook groups (2020–2024) indicate sightings and howls are still reported, particularly near Eureka Springs and Devil’s Den State Park.
