Built in 1765, the Morris-Jumel Mansion is the oldest surviving house in Manhattan and possibly its most haunted. Once used as a military headquarters by George Washington, the mansion later became home to Eliza Jumel, a wealthy and eccentric woman rumoured to have dabbled in spiritualism. Visitors and staff have reported hearing disembodied voices, experiencing cold drafts, and seeing ghostly figures moving through locked rooms. Eliza herself is said to appear near her former bedroom, dressed in mourning, with some claiming she even interrupted a school group tour to shout, “My house!” From colonial generals to tragic deaths, the mansion’s long history seems woven into the very fabric of its walls and it gained a reputation as one of New York City’s most active paranormal sites.
