King John's Castle

This 13th-century fortress sits atop 800 years of siege history, but its most active entities are the “Black Monks,” seen gliding through the courtyard and vanishing into the solid stone walls of the Great Hall. The castle’s underground “Siege Mines” are a hotspot for “The Weeping Woman,” believed to be a victim of the 1691 Siege, whose agonizing sobs are captured on audio recorders during night tours. Modern activity includes “phantom light” emanating from the high turrets when the castle is unpowered and the sound of metallic clashing in the armory. Recent 2024 thermal imaging captures show “human-shaped voids” in the cold stone stairwells, moving toward the battlements. The castle’s proximity to the River Shannon is said to amplify the “water-based” spiritual energy, leading to frequent sightings of a drowned soldier near the sally port.
