The Kanas Lake Monster is a long-reported cryptid said to inhabit the deep, icy waters of Kanas Lake in China’s Altai Mountains. Descriptions from fishermen, herders, and tourists since at least the early 20th century describe massive dark shapes, humps breaking the surface, and creatures allegedly dragging horses or livestock into the lake. Modern sightings include multiple tourist videos from the 2000s showing large moving objects beneath the surface, though scientists suggest oversized fish such as taimen may explain some encounters this does not fully account for the reported size, speed, and coordinated movement.
