Taking place in the freezing, snow-covered woodlands near the village of Imjärvi, this 1970 event stands as Finland’s most famous Close Encounter of the Third Kind, notable for its physical physiological trauma. On the afternoon of January 7, 1970, forest worker Aarno Heinonen and farmer Esko Viljo were cross-country skiing in clear, sub-zero conditions. Around 4:45 PM, the men stopped in a small glade to rest. They suddenly observed a brilliant, elongated glowing object descending silently from the south. Within seconds, a strange buzzing soundlikened to a (swarming beehive) filled the clearing, and a metallic, disc-shaped craft roughly nine feet in diameter hovered just twelve feet above them. The core of the incident centers on a highly bizarre physical manifestation. As the craft hovered, a thick, reddish-gray mist containing distinct sulfur-scented particles discharged from its base, instantly clouding the clearing and making the men’s throats burn. Out of the center of this mist, a narrow, intense beam of light shot straight down into the snow. Emerging inside this beam was a miniature, humanoid entity approximately three feet tall. The creature wore a light-green protective suit, white gloves, dark green boots, and a conical metallic helmet. In its hands, it held a small black box-like device from which a pulsating yellow light emitted. After only a few seconds, the light beam snapped shut, and both the entity and the craft vanished. The encounter is critically analyzed by medical and scientific groups due to the immediate, severe physical symptoms both men experienced. Within hours, Heinonen suffered from complete numbness on the side of his body facing the light, severe joint swelling, and debilitating vomiting. Viljo suffered severe facial swelling, extreme headaches, and skin discoloration resembling a chemical or radiation burn. Subsequent examinations by clinical physicians documented high blood pressure and neurological disorientation. Skeptics have proposed that the men may have suffered from localized carbon monoxide poisoning or an acute reaction to industrial chemical leaks in the area.
