In Icelandic folklore, tröll (trolls) are enormous, human-like beings who live among the island’s volcanic mountains, sea stacks, and remote lava fields—active at night but turned to stone by sunlight, a belief used to explain Iceland’s many troll-shaped rock formations such as Reynisdrangar and Hvítserkur. Often reclusive but dangerously territorial, they are said to lure travellers off paths during storms or appear as huge silhouettes along cliff edges. Legend also ties certain stone formations to specific trolls frozen mid-stride, keeping their presence woven into local geography.
