Hashima Island

Rising from the East China Sea like a rusted, concrete battleship, Hashima Island—commonly known as Gunkanjima—stands as a decaying monument to Japan’s rapid industrialization and the human suffering that fueled it. From 1887 to 1974, this undersea coal mining facility was the most densely populated place on Earth, cramming over 5,000 residents into a tiny fortress of high-rise apartments protected by massive sea walls. The island’s energy is deeply scarred by the “dark period” of World War II, when hundreds of conscripted Korean and Chinese laborers were forced into the perilous, sweltering shafts 1,000 meters below sea level. Many died from exhaustion, malnutrition, or mining accidents, earning Hashima the grim nickname “Stairway to Hell.”

Since its sudden abandonment in 1974, the island has transformed into a sprawling “ghost city” where the personal effects of the miners—rotting shoes, shattered television sets, and abandoned schoolbooks remain frozen in time. Local fishermen and authorized visitors report a suffocating atmosphere within the concrete skeletons of the apartment blocks, often accompanied by the sound of phantom footsteps on the rubble and the rhythmic “clinking” of pickaxes echoing from the flooded mine shafts. Chilling sightings involve “white figures” seen standing on the seawalls, staring out toward the mainland, and disembodied whispers in the wind that seem to call out in multiple languages. Modern activity recorded at the site includes numerous “electronic voice phenomena” (EVP) captures in the old hospital wing and strange light anomalies darting through the crumbling rubble of the “Block 65” apartments, marking Hashima as a premier site of residual industrial trauma.
