Constructed primarily in the 8th century, this hill fortress is a site of immense residual trauma, most notably centered on the Man Singh Palace and the subterranean Jhulan Ghar. The most documented “hotspot” is the palace’s underground levels, which were converted into high-security dungeons by the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb to imprison and eventually execute his own brother, Murad Baksh, and other royal rivals. Witnesses and local guards report the sound of phantom heavy iron chains dragging across the stone floors of these lower chambers, accompanied by EVPs of labored breathing and muffled voices in Persian and Old Hindi.

The fort’s darker reputation is anchored to the Jauhar Kund, a ritual tank where the queens and women of the court committed mass self-immolation to avoid capture during the 1232 siege by Iltutmish. Visitors report a persistent “weight” in the air near the tank and the smell of smoke and burning oil even when no fires are present. Modern documentation includes the appearance of shadowy figures in royal attire seen moving along the ramparts near the Hathi Pol (Elephant Gate) at dusk. The most chilling modern account involves the “Phantom Sentry,” a tall, turbaned figure seen standing guard at the palace entrance who reportedly dissipates into mist when approached by security. The site is noted for its “audio loops,” where the rhythmic sound of horse hooves on stone echoes through the empty courtyards long after the fort has been cleared of tourists.
