Case Overview

What happened at General Asahel Stone Mansion?

Built in 1872 at 201 West Orange Street, the General Asahel Stone Mansion is a towering Second Empire house of brick, mansard roofs and a three-storey tower, raised by Civil War quartermaster Asahel Stone as a showpiece of money and influence on the edge of Winchester. The grandeur is only half the story now. Paranormal reports tied to the mansion have grown around a small cast of recurring figures: General Stone himself, Lydia Stone on the staircase, Wendy, the little girl in a yellow dress, and Lydia’s brother John on the top floor. That staircase is the house’s clearest hotspot, where Lydia and Wendy are most often placed, while the top floor is linked with John and with the rougher activity of male voices, mumbling, and a man heard cursing in the dark. Investigators also keep returning to the sensation of being followed through the house, especially around the stairs and upper rooms, which makes the activity feel close and personal rather than distant. The mansion’s mood is sharpened by Stone’s own history as a powerful wartime figure, banker and landowner, and by the fact that his grave lies in the cemetery he helped establish nearby.
