Built in the early 1700s to defend Bacalar from pirates, the Fort of San Felipe stands watch over the lagoon to this day. Local legends speak of shadowy figures moving through the old cells and ramparts, the echoes of battles and sieges lingering after dark. Visitors sometimes report unexplained noises and glimpses of “restless spirits” of both defenders and pirates within the thick stone walls.
