Founded in 1827, Fort Leavenworth is both the oldest active Army post west of the Mississippi and one of the most haunted military sites in the United States. Soldiers, officers, and their families have reported paranormal encounters for over 150 years. The Rookery, the oldest residence on base, is said to be haunted by a woman in white and the spirits of children who died there. The Disciplinary Barracks, once home to infamous prisoners, is linked to reports of phantom footsteps and shadowy figures. Other accounts include spectral cavalry soldiers still patrolling the parade grounds and unexplained cold spots in historic homes. The fort’s long history of warfare, imprisonment, and tragedy has cemented its reputation as Kansas’s premier military haunting.
