Dingonek – Kenya
Nearest city: Kisumu, Lake Victoria region
The Dingonek is a legendary water monster said to dwell in rivers and lakes around Lake Victoria. Descriptions vary, but it is often portrayed as a 12–18 foot creature with a scaly body, leopard-like spots, a crocodile’s tail, and large tusks. In 1907, explorer John Alfred Jordan reported shooting at such a beast in Kenya’s Maggori River, sparking international interest. Local tribes fear the Dingonek as a dangerous predator, and though no modern evidence exists, its hybrid appearance has kept it alive in African cryptid lore.
