Case Overview

What happened at Buckner Building?

Perched on the edge of a remote, glacier-carved fjord, the decaying concrete carcass of the Buckner Building is a massive Cold War relic that functions as Alaska’s ultimate modern ruin. Completed in 1953 by the US military, this colossal, six-story compound was known as the “City Under One Roof.” It was engineered to withstand the harshest arctic winters, housing over 1,000 soldiers and featuring a self-contained infrastructure that included a hospital, a theater, a bowling alley, a jail, and a massive steam plant. The entire military operation was hastily abandoned in 1960 when the strategic focus shifted, leaving the building vulnerable to the historic 1964 Good Friday Earthquake, which fractured its structural integrity and left it permanently decommissioned.

The location’s paranormal activity centers on a severe, industrial-strength grid that has completely defied reclamation efforts. Now heavily contaminated with asbestos and constantly flooded with freezing glacial meltwater, the hollowed-out concrete corridors are notorious for their intense, oppressive atmosphere. Urban explorers and specialized documentary crews who navigate the pitch-black basement tunnels consistently record aggressive, disembodied footsteps marching in military unison, the echoing sound of slamming iron cell doors, and rapid technical failure on digital tracking gear. The entire complex sits wrapped in a profound, freezing silence, with investigators warning that the lingering, panoptic energy of the former Cold War bunker creates an intensely hostile environment for any electronic tracking arrays.
