Bili-Uere – Democratic Republic of Congo

Nearest city: Bili, Bondo

The Bili-Uere apes, sometimes dubbed the “lion killers,” are reported from the remote forests north of the Congo River near Bili in the Uele region. Local hunters describe unusually large chimpanzee-like apes with gorilla features that hunt in groups and have been known to attack leopards. First reported in the early 20th century, they gained wider attention when Belgian colonial officers collected massive skulls and tools in the 1930s. Modern primatologists suggest they may be a unique population of eastern chimpanzees with distinct behavior, though locals maintain they are a separate, more dangerous species. Occasional expeditions continue to search the Bili forest for evidence.
