Beast of Gévaudan – France
Nearest city: Gévaudan region (mainly Lozère, extending into Haute-Loire)

Between 1764 and 1767, the rugged highlands of south-central France centered around Langogne and the dense Mercoire forest were held hostage by a predatory enigma that defied the laws of nature. The terror began in Langogne when a young woman, Marie-Jeanne Valet—later dubbed the “Maid of Gévaudan”—was forced to defend herself against a creature that bypassed her cattle to hunt her instead. This was not a mere wolf; witnesses described a chimeric monster the size of a calf with a reddish coat and a terrifying, horse-like cry. The Beast’s reign of terror claimed over a hundred lives, mostly women and children, often found with surgical injuries that suggested a chilling, calculated intelligence rather than animal instinct. Even the royal hunters of King Louis XV were baffled as the creature allegedly shrugged off point-blank musket fire, vanishing into the mountain mists as if it were part of the landscape itself. The nightmare only ended when local hunter Jean Chastel loaded his gun with blessed silver bullets and felled the creature in the forest of Tazeure. Today, the region remains a focal point for those seeking the boundary between folklore and reality, where the memory of the “Red Beast” still haunts the deep forests and rocky ravines of the Massif Central.
