This overcrowding birthed a century of horrors: ice-pick lobotomies, grueling hydrotherapy, and the rumored “underground cells” in the basement where unruly patients were allegedly shackled to the walls in total darkness. The energy here is stagnant, heavy, and physically oppressive, anchored by the three numbered cemeteries containing 1,900 patients buried under stone pegs without names. The site is dominated by Margaret Schilling, whose 1978 death in the shuttered “Ward N” left a permanent, human-shaped “Stain” on the concrete that resists all chemical removal.
