Aokigahara Forest

Aokigahara, known as the “Sea of Trees,” spreads across the northwest base of Mount Fuji and is regarded as one of Japan’s most haunted places. The forest’s dense canopy silences sound, creating a disorienting stillness that has inspired centuries of legends about restless yūrei — spirits of those who died within its boundaries. In the 20th century, Aokigahara became infamous as a site of suicides, prompting the installation of signs urging visitors to seek help. Hikers continue to report strange whispers, flickering lights, and sudden malfunctions of electronic devices. The forest remains both a place of beauty and a powerful symbol of Japan’s enduring relationship with life, death, and the supernatural.
