Case Overview
What happened at Almas?
Embedded in the cultural DNA of Central Asia, the Almas (Mongolian for “wild man”) represents one of cryptozoology’s most compelling cases for a surviving relict hominid. Unlike the more “ape-like” Yeti of the Himalayas, the Almas is consistently described as strikingly human. A bipedal figure standing between five and six feet tall, draped in a coat of dark, reddish-brown fur, yet possessing distinctively anthropomorphic facial features. Sightings are concentrated within the rugged limestone massifs of the Altai Mountains and the desolate Tien Shan passes. Local nomadic traditions and 15th-century historical records depict a creature of immense physical power and a nocturnal, reclusive nature. While mainstream science often points to misidentified Gobi bears or feral humans, the “Neanderthal Survival Theory”. Soviet scientist Boris Porshnev suggests the Almas may be a remnant population of Pleistocene-era hominins that retreated into the world’s most inaccessible plateaus to escape the expansion of Homo sapiens.
