Aleya Lights

Floating over the deep marshes and mangrove swamps of West Bengal and Bangladesh, the Aleya Lights are a persistent “Foolish Fire” phenomenon that local fishing communities treat as an active, predatory threat. Unlike the European folklore of the Will-o’-the-Wisp, which is often seen as mischievous, the Aleya are believed to be the restless spirits of fishermen who drowned in these waters. The lights appear as flickering, colorful orbs—usually blue, green, or red—that hover just above the water’s surface after sunset, particularly during the monsoon season from September to November.

The danger of the Aleya is their documented behavior of luring witnesses. Fishermen have reported the lights mimicking the appearance of a boat’s lantern or a distant torch, leading them into deep, treacherous mudflats or thick mangrove roots where they lose their bearings and drown. While some accounts describe the lights as “guardians” that warn of oncoming storms, the majority of reports focus on a malevolent intent, where the light seems to retreat just as a person approaches. Scientific theories point to the combustion of methane and phosphine gases rising from decaying organic matter in the swamp, but the “intelligent” movement and the sightings of humanoid silhouettes within the glow keep the paranormal reputation alive. The most frequent “hotspots” are the secluded, misty channels of the Sundarbans Delta, where the silence is occasionally broken by disembodied voices or the sound of oars hitting the water when no other boats are visible.
