Case Overview

What happened at Pudasjärvi UFO Waves?

Centred around the remote, frozen fells of Syötekylä and the Iso-Syöte highlands, Pudasjärvi is internationally recognized as Finland’s ultimate, historic UFO hotspot. Often compared by European researchers to Roswell, New Mexico, the region was the epicentre of an intense, highly documented wave of aerial anomalies between November 13, 1967, and January 29, 1971. During this concentrated window, hundreds of local forestry workers, motorists, and border guards witnessed a bizarre series of silent, glowing spheres, metallic saucer-shaped craft, and structured light phenomena navigating the low, subarctic skies. The defining phase of the Pudasjärvi wave occurred in September 1969, when a highly publicized close encounter mobilized the Nordic research community. To systematically document the phenomenon, engineer Ahti Karivieri and motorist Atte Särkelä launched a dedicated, small-scale scientific photography project in the early 1970s. Utilizing specialized black-and-white, color slide, and experimental infrared films, the duo captured approximately 400 frames of the anomalies. The infrared film yielded the most significant results, revealing distinct, highly structured heat signatures and solid spherical outlines that were completely invisible to the naked human eye. While skeptical academic groups later theorized that the sightings could be attributed to “earthquake lights” generated by tectonic friction along an ancient, localized geological fault line, the precise, coordinated movements of the objects defied simple meteorological explanations. The persistent aerial intrusions were so intense that they sparked massive public debates, led to the formation of the Oulu UFO Club, and even prompted speculative, government-backed geological expeditions to determine if the craft were attracted to suspected underground uranium deposits in the area. Today, the region remains a vital, quiet pilgrimage site for northern European anomalous researchers, with visitors tracking the fells routinely experiencing localized magnetic interference and abrupt equipment failures in the freezing subarctic night.
