Brosnya – Russia
Nearest city: Andreapol, Tver Oblast

Brosnya is the legendary creature said to lurk beneath Lake Brosno, a deep lake in western Russia long associated with disappearances, strange surface disturbances, and one of the country’s most persistent monster traditions. Local folklore describes it as a vast, pale beast—sometimes dragon-like, sometimes more serpentine—with a glowing or bioluminescent quality that makes it especially eerie in low light. The most dramatic legend places the creature in the 13th century, when it supposedly rose from the lake and devoured horses and soldiers from a Tatar-Mongol force, sending the rest into retreat. Later reports are less mythical but no less unsettling, usually describing a huge pale head, violent movement beneath the water, and an unnatural shimmering glow spreading across the lake’s surface. Some scientists have suggested these effects may be caused by gas hydrates or underwater eruptions disturbing the lake bed, but that has done little to kill the legend. In 2002, investigators from Kosmopoisk reportedly used echo-sounding equipment and detected a large mass suspended above the bottom silt, too substantial to be dismissed as a shoal of fish or submerged debris. More recent footage from regional explorers has kept the story alive, showing strange rhythmic disturbances in the centre of the lake during otherwise calm conditions.
