The Tizheruk is a high-level predatory cryptid native to the frigid waters around King Island and the Bering Strait. Unlike the generic “sea serpent,” the Inupiat describe a creature with a head that spans seven feet, characterized by a blunt, wolf-like snout and a body covered in thick, dark fur that transitions into a massive, finned tail. It is notorious for its “land-breach” hunting style, where it reportedly snatches victims directly off the ice floes or the rocky shoreline. The entity is a master of camouflage; witnesses describe it bobbing vertically in the water to mimic the appearance of a floating log or a seal to lure hunters into striking distance.

Local tradition warns of a “vibration” felt through the hulls of umiaks (skin-covered boats) moments before a sighting, which many believe is a form of low-frequency echolocation used to stun or locate prey. A specific historical account from the mid-20th century involves the Ukhivok village elders, who documented the creature’s ability to leap nearly ten feet out of the water to clear a boat’s gunwale. The primary activity is concentrated on the eastern cliffs of King Island, near the abandoned stilt-village of Ukhivok. Here, the underwater topography drops into extreme depths almost immediately at the shoreline. While the island has been largely uninhabited since the 1960s, seasonal hunters and researchers still report “unexplained capsizes” in the calmest of waters and the sight of a “mammalian fluke” the size of a small plane surfacing briefly near the sea caves.
