Built in 1890 at 1306 North Broadway, Greystone is a heavy, Romanesque fortress of limestone and marble that mirrors the reputation of its original owner, Major Eldad Cicero Camp. Camp, a Union officer and coal magnate, was a polarizing figure in Knoxville, notoriously remembered for the 1868 killing of former Confederate Colonel Henry Ashby during a street confrontation. The mansion’s design is intentionally severe, featuring imported marble and dark, richly paneled rooms that seem to hold onto the “Old Violence” of its creator. Local accounts suggest that Camp’s presence remains tied to the structure, with the most concentrated activity reported on the second floor.

During the building’s decades as the headquarters for WATE-TV, staff frequently documented unexplained footsteps and the sound of heavy doors slamming shut on the upper levels when the building was nearly empty. One of the most cited pieces of evidence is a custodian’s video recording from the early 2000s, which allegedly captured a dark, physical shape moving through a second-floor hallway during an after-hours shift. Visitors and investigators often describe a sudden, heavy shift in the air when crossing the threshold of the second-floor landing, accompanied by a persistent feeling of being watched from the shadows. The haunting is characterized as “territorial,” with the activity often peaking when the building undergoes structural changes or maintenance.
