Hidden at the bottom of a dark ravine in the Rogačica river valley, this collapsed watermill is the source of a genuine, modern-day panic. Unlike typical legends, the story of Sava Savanović is treated by locals as a physical threat rather than a ghost story. According to village history, Savanović was an 18th-century miller who stayed “alive” by preying on those who came to the ravine to grind grain. The fear is so deep-seated that when the mill’s roof finally caved in during 2012, the local council actually issued a formal public health warning, telling residents to keep garlic and crosses handy because they believed the “Vampir” had been unhoused and was looking for a new place to hunt.

The area is notorious for travelers and mill workers going missing over the years, with many locals believing the entity is a biological predator that never truly left the brush. People who visit the ruins describe a “sound vacuum” near the water where the noise of the river and the forest suddenly goes dead silent. Witnesses have reported a large, dark figure moving through the trees with incredible speed, often leaving behind a heavy, rotting smell. Even with the mill in ruins, people still hear the rhythmic “thud” of a millstone grinding at night, and investigators have picked up EVPs of heavy breathing and splashing in the water when no one is there. To this day, the people of Zarožje refuse to go near the ravine after the sun goes down.
