Crag Hotel – Malaysia
Nearest city: Ayer Itam, Penang Hill
Widely considered Penang’s most atmospheric ruin, the Crag Hotel served as a colonial retreat and later the Uplands Boarding School before its final abandonment in 1977. During its years as a school, students famously reported “poltergeist” activity, such as waking to find their heavy dormitory beds rearranged into perfect lines or discovering themselves moved onto the floor while asleep. Since the site fell into decay, modern reports have shifted to sightings of a “Small Girl in White” wandering the overgrown stone terraces and the sound of phantom piano music echoing from the empty dining hall. While the site remains a dilapidated shell reclaimed by jungle vegetation in 2026, it continues to draw visitors who navigate steep hiking trails to witness its ‘ghostly’ colonial architecture and panoramic views of the island.
