La Noria Ghost Town & Cemetary – Chile
Nearest city: Atacama Desert, (Tarapacá Region, near Pozo Almonte)

Located in the heart of the Atacama Desert, La Noria is a former saltpeter mining town that was abandoned in the 1930s and has since gained international notoriety as one of the world’s most terrifying ghost towns. The site’s dark reputation is deeply tied to its cemetery, where many graves have been dug up and left open, allegedly by grave robbers or as a result of “restless spirits” physically emerging from the earth. Local lore is rife with accounts of shadow figures wandering the derelict streets after sunset and the sounds of phantom children playing amidst the crumbling stone workshops. Travelers and photographers frequently report a profound sense of dread and capture “ghostly” anomalies on film, leading to the legend that the former miners who lived and died in slave-like conditions continue to inhabit the ruins long after the town’s economic collapse.
