Sai Ying Pun Community Complex

Commonly known as the “High Street Ghost House,” this imposing granite structure served as a psychiatric hospital from 1939 until 1961 and was allegedly used as an execution ground by the Imperial Japanese Army during the occupation. The building’s dark history is centered on its arched veranda, where locals have reported sightings of a spectral figure in traditional Chinese clothing bursting into flames, as well as the sound of heavy, disembodied footsteps echoing through the corridors. In the decades following its abandonment as a mental asylum, it became a notorious “suicide spot,” leading to modern reports of headless ghosts and chilling, disembodied screams that prompted the government to preserve only its facade during redevelopment. Today, the site functions as a community center, but the preserved Victorian exterior remains one of Hong Kong’s most feared paranormal landmarks, with many believing the spirits of former inmates and war victims remain tethered to the stone arches.
