Once a thriving coal-mining town in the Abkhazian SSR, Akarmara was abandoned after the Georgian–Abkhaz conflict in the early 1990s. Today, crumbling Soviet apartment blocks, a decaying hospital, and overgrown streets stand frozen in time. Visitors report eerie silence, shadowy figures in empty windows, and an unsettling feeling of being watched.
