Case Overview

What happened at Resurrection Mary?

Since the 1930s, motorists along Archer Avenue have reported encounters with Resurrection Mary, the most famous “vanishing hitchhiker” in the United States. Described as a young blonde woman in a white party dress, she is said to appear near the former Willowbrook Ballroom, asking for a ride before vanishing outside Resurrection Cemetery. Eyewitnesses recall her icy touch and the imprint of hands on the cemetery’s wrought-iron gate—bent bars that remain on display. Many link her to Mary Bregovy, a woman killed in a 1934 car accident, though no proof confirms the match. Her legend endures through decades of police reports, driver testimonies, and Chicago’s enduring fascination with Archer Avenue’s restless dead.
