Built in 1791, the St. Francis Inn is among the oldest continuously operating inns in the United States and one of St. Augustine’s most haunted landmarks. Legend tells of Lily, a servant who fell in love with a soldier quartered at the house; after their affair was discovered, she took her own life in one of the upstairs rooms. Guests in that same suite—now Room 3, or Lily’s Room—report perfume scents, cold spots, and objects moving on their own. Staff also tell of apparitions in antique mirrors and footsteps echoing along the coquina hallways. Its centuries-old courtyard, once part of a Spanish colonial home, adds to the inn’s enduring reputation as Florida’s gentlest haunting.
