Mae Nak Shrine – Thailand
Nearest city: Bangkok
One of Thailand’s most enduring ghost legends, Mae Nak is said to be the spirit of a young woman who died in childbirth while her husband was away at war. Unaware of her death, he returned home and lived with her ghost until the truth was revealed. Today, her shrine near Wat Mahabut in Bangkok is a pilgrimage site where offerings of toys, clothes, and flowers are left to appease her spirit. Visitors report seeing her apparition near the canal, hearing a woman’s sobs, and feeling an oppressive presence at night.
